The Temperance Tarot Card: An angel with red wings stands with one foot in water and the other on earth. The angel holds two chalices. It appears that the left hand one is pouring water into the right hand one. But it can also be seen as water (or energy) that is flowing both ways - from low to high and from high to low. The angel has an orange upward-facing triangle on its chest as well as the Hebrew name of God symbolized by the letters YHVH. The angel’s crown is gold and its gown is white. In the background is a volcano; a mirky pathway or stream of hardening lava connects the volcano to the pond. There are two yellow daffodil flowers growing in a field of grass reflecting the posture of the angel’s chalices.  

The Story of the Temperance Card: The Temperance card contains a strong allusion to Jacob’s Ladder - the pathways by which an exchange of energy between higher and lower takes place. This is especially seen in the two chalices merging waters, but also in the connecting pathway or river of hardening lava between the lower pool of water and the volcano above. The gold color of the volcanic eruption is a sign that in this card, the fire erupting in the distance is the fire of spirit, not the lower fires of passion and the shadow self (as in The Devil card).

In fact, the lower fires of passion and shadow have been integrated into the angel and form her wings. Her ability to utilize those lower energies is what gives her the ability to balance on both earth and water simultaneously. The angel’s feet show this balancing of forces; one is on the earth and one in the water, indicating a degree of balance that has been attained. 

The angel’s crown is gold, her gown is white, and at the center of her chest is an orange upward-facing triangle and the name of God. Orange is the merger of yellow and red - the merger of the golden crown and the red, representing the lower fires of passion and desire. The earth around the angel is flowering because she has brought light into her shadow self. She has embraced her lower passions as an essential component of her humanity and that fire has now become the wings that enable her to take flight and stay balanced. 

The Angel's ability to mix higher and lower as well as left and right represents the awakening alchemist within each of us. The alchemist that manifests when we allow the higher energies to mix with the lower ones. In this light, we see that the angel is simply the human who has purified and uplifted some of her lower aspects. But the angel, or alchemist, doesn’t let go of the shadow aspects of herself and fly off into spirit. She maintains the connection with the lower and can even be seen as channeling the higher energy into the earth and water through her feet in order to nourish her surroundings. 

Association with Sagittarius: The Temperance tarot card is associated with the sign of Sagittarius and represents focused aspirations that come directly from a purified and balanced channel between heaven and earth - body and spirit. It represents your ability to be the fifth element, the alchemist, uniting the 4 earthly elements into infinite manifestations.

When to use the Temperance card: When you are in need of finding balance and peace, meditate on this card. Use it when you are feeling off-kilter and in need of a respite from your spiritual and physical work to recharge yourself. Use it when you feel you are overly engaged in your shadow and healing work and need to bring in new inspirations from your higher self. 

The opposite is true as well - when you are feeling too ungrounded and overly engaged or even hiding in the spiritual. Use its energy and symbolism to remind yourself that you are the meeting point of the higher and lower, especially in your heart center. Visualize your lower nature - the fires of your shadow rising up and becoming the wings that help you fly. Remind yourself that you are human as well as angelic.
